New York City was freaking cold. Coming from a part of Virginia where she could get away with tank tops at Christmas time and snow was usually faked, Bonnie was pretty convinced she was going to freeze to her bones most days. It was one thing when she was out running, and she kept warm from that. It was one look at the temperature outside that pretty much convinced her to keep her butt inside for the day. Or for as much as the day she could. She’d finished up some of her History home for Ric’s class, and then grabbed her spell book and a bag of supplies. She had a little down time, she might as well get some practise time in.

She’d seen what came from her use of the darker forms of magic in her world. While there were no spirits here to screw with her, Bonnie had been very careful with herself. Hopefully there were no parties up on the 13th floor, and she might find someplace quiet to practice. Her room was generally not the most peaceful, and it wasn’t often she practised around anyone else either. Not unless she was practising with him, and no one by her could do that right now.

Hitting the button on the elevator, Bonnie was shouldering her bag, her book held tight against her stomach, when the doors slid open. She took a step into the elevator and almost stopped when she saw someone else inside of it. But, at least with the large amount of people here now, she recognized this one. “Hey, Remus.” she said cheerfully, hitting the elevator button. “What are you up to?”

Remus had been reading. Emmeline had written down a few new defensive spells that he’d wanted to try out, and he was going over her notes in the elevator when the doors opened. He was so engrossed in the spell that he didn’t realize it was Bonnie until she said his name. He snapped his head up, hair flopping over into his eyes as he did so. He raised a hand to nudge it out of his way again and smiled at her. “Hello Bonnie. Emmeline gave me a few spells to look over and practice.” He held up the sheet of notes. “She drew me visual aides,” he pointed to the drawings of a little stick figure with shaggy hair holding a wand. “I was just looking over them. What about you?”

Her eyes dropped to the notes, one eyebrow arching as she got a look at the visual aides that had been drawn for him. “I like the detail.” It was hard not to be incredibly curious over what spells he was learning, but in the end it wouldn’t matter her for her. She’d only be able to continue to silently fangirl over them. “Something along the same lines.” she said with a shrug, holding out the grimoire she was carrying. It was in her bag when she was pulled through, and it was the only one in her collection from home that she had. She cracked open the book to a random page, the paper old a yellow, the words written in a completely different language. “I had some free time so I figured I should use it to practise.”

Remus was just as interested in her magic as he was his own. He was fascinated by their connection to nature and tended to absorb everything Bonnie said about it whenever the topic came up. It was his own sort of fanboying. He moved closer to her to look at the page she had opened the grimoire to. Standing just behind her and looking over her shoulder, he made a few Hm-ing noises and gestured to a cluster of foreign words at the bottom of the page. “Oh yes, I like what they’ve done here. Very nice.” He turned to look at her for a moment before he grinned. “Want some company? We can practise together.”

It was hard not to be extremely aware of his proximity to her like this. Also, once again, she was really short. But wasn’t that always the case around everyone else in existence. Bonnie looked to the section of the page she was gesturing to and laughed. “That’s actually talking about Astral Projection. I don’t have the strength for that one.” it would probably be many years before she was capable of sending someone. “Sure.” she said with a grin, “Just don’t blame me if I openly stare a few times. It’s the best I can do to reduce my inner fangirl.” If she could do half the spells like people from his world, she wouldn’t feel quite as useless half the time when real danger popped up. They were faster, more effective, apparently you grew stronger much more quickly there too.

When she told him the section he’d pointed to referenced Astral Projection, he took a moment to look at it with a keener interest. He still had no idea what any of it meant, but it fascinated him nonetheless.

“Stare away,” he said easily as he turned from the book to look at her with a smile. “It’ll be the first time I’m trying them, so there’s a good probability that I’ll just be waving my wand to no effect for a bit. Probably trampling all over your inner fangirl in the process.”

“I’m not sure anything could possibly trample my inner fangirl.” she said with a shake of her head. It was probably hard for Remus to comprehend how much the books about his best friends son and impacted the lives of millions and millions of people. It seemed crazy, “Besides, that’s about how it works for me too, minus the wand waving.” It would just be a bunch of witch language. Some of it would work, some of it wouldn’t.

It was about that time the elevator stopped at the thirteenth floor and the door dinged open. Bonnie flipped her book closed, and tucked it under her arm. “What spells did they give you to work on?” she asked, looking back the the paper he was holding again as she stepped out onto the floor.

Remus took a step to the side to give her room to leave the elevator. Once she stepped out, he followed after her. “Two for now. I’ve got a blasting curse, and an assault hex that will allow me to use other items to attack whoever I direct them at.” He rubbed the back of his neck uncomfortably. “Emme’s just coming off a war. She’s a bit paranoid still. Wants my defensive magic stronger than it currently is. Just in case.”

“I wish I had more spells like that.” she said honestly, with a shrug. Maybe if she could be more useful in fights she’d feel less helpless at home half the time. “Can’t say I blame your friend. If I had magic like that mastered, I’d want it perfect too.” and she hadn’t even been in a full on war. Just the battles that happened in Mystic Falls. Bonnie pushed the doors to the room that could be used for parties open, more than pleased to find it empty. “At least here, we have to be worried about.” For now, as long as no one really bad came through the Portal. Though she had a feeling SHIELD would detain them if that happened. Bonnie glanced around the room, before choosing herself a spot on the floor and making herself comfortable.

His eyebrows raised slightly in curiosity. He knew a little about Bonnie’s life in Mystic Falls from snippets of conversations they’d had, but he’d never pried. Or worse, gone searching for himself. “Maybe we can find a way to adapt some of the spells in that book of yours to do something similar.” He followed her into the empty room and watched as she settled into a space on the floor. “Hang on, then. Just one second.” He pulled his wand from his pocket and conjured up a squashy fat cushion. “Catch,” he said tossing it over to her.

She didn’t miss the curious look she gave her, and she shrugged. “We don’t have a Voldemort, but we have a serious vampire issue that’s caused a lot of deaths in very short period of time.” She couldn’t even pin all the deaths on Klaus, though he was by far the worst. “The majority of my friends have all been killed, thankfully they all come back one way or another.” either by magic or by turning, but still, they were there. She watched him work magic with a massive grin on her face, it never failed to make her jealous, and caught the offered pillow. “Well, cute and a gentleman.” she said with a laugh. “Thank you.”

“It sounds like you could definitely use some more defensive spells on your side, just in case.” Of course no one knew if any of them would even remember any of this when and if they went home. But it certainly felt a bit better than sitting around and doing nothing. “We’ll see what we can come up with. And Bonnie? I’m sorry. About your friends.”

His cheeks may have warmed just a little when she called him cute. He played it off with a silly bow. “I know. I’m quite the catch.” He conjured up a second cushion and sat down on it. “Right. Let’s see what you can do, then I’ll try and see if I can make this pillow attack you.” He grinned.

“Thanks.” she said with a shrug, brushing it off. “But I’m here now.” and here was a lot safer, not to mention a lot of people who were dead were coming back. Sadly some of the ones she’d rather not see enter her life again, but she couldn’t wish them back to their deaths.

The corner of her lip quirked up in a smile, and laughed. “Do that and I’ll attack you with a pillow myself.” she warned. She wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to see, their magic worked so differently. The things she could do would end up looking less flashy than anything he could do. A lot of spells didn’t come without a purpose. She went about emptying out the contents of her backpack, which were really just a lot of candles. A few things she kept in the bag. “Keep in mind there’s nothing that...flashy, or useful in everyday life about my magic.” Glancing around, she found something useful in the corner of a room, a plant with a flower that was starting to wilt. Quickly she retrieved it, placing it in front of her. “We’re connected to nature.” she explained, placing her hands around the plant, cupping it, and closing her eyes. “There’s no fireworks I can set off, magical games, or hidden schools and cities.” she said, almost longingly. A few seconds later, the flower on the plant came to life, healing into full bloom.

She dropped her hands away, placing them on her knees. “We’re the people who created the supernatural world. Vampires, werewolves, whatever else might be out there, was all caused by witches and warlocks. And when we die, we still play a part in what is allowed to happen.” When she closed her eyes again, she, took a breath. Her magic wasn’t as fast in some cases either. The lights went out, the curtains fell closed, and a few seconds later, all the candles she had brought with her burst into flame. “Though honestly- sometimes I think I’d rather play Quidditch.” She opened her eyes, and held out her hands in front of her. The flames from the candles vanished, and then she was holding the fire in her hands, the flames burning harmlessly across her palms. “It seems a lot more interesting than breaking curses.”

Bonnie could think there was nothing flashy about her magic all she liked, but Remus was absolutely captivated. His face had lit up as the flower came back to life. His eyes flicked upward to her face to watch while she spoke. Magic or no, she was captivating all in herself. His eyes grew wider when the lights went out and the curtains swung closed, and a mad grin crossed his face when the candles burst into flame. When she transferred the flame to her palms, he reached a hand toward her and could feel the heat coming off of them. “Wow,” he said, intelligently.

Amused, Bonnie pressed her lips together to prevent a small laugh, and just watched as he felt the heat on her hands, the fire continuing to burn without any harm to her. “Just a few small things I guess.” she said with a shrug. She could be stronger with another witch or warlock, and Bonnie found herself wondering if despite their differences, Remus’ power could have the same effect. Finally she closed her palms, and the fire leaped back to the candles. Bonnie laced her fingers together and leaned on her legs, arms on her knees. “Still doing to attack me with that pillow?”

Remus laughed. “It doesn’t seem quite as threatening now, I admit.” He pushed himself up onto his feet. “Care to assist me for a moment?” He asked, reaching a hand to help her up. “I promise I won’t attack you with any pillows.” He reached down for the cushion and handed it to her. “When you’re ready, toss that up into the air and I’ll try to blast it.”

It took a few tries for him to get it. The first try, the cushion fell back down to the ground completely unharmed. The second it scuttled off to the side with a slight singe mark. But on his third attempt, Remus blasted the cushion right through the middle, and managed to cover the both of them with the feathers that had stuffed it. He blew one out of his face with a smirk. “Well then, I suppose third time is the charm.”

“Pillows get the bad end of deals.” she said, more to herself but out loud the time she’d completely destroyed one of Elena’s pillows to show her that she was a witch. Back when things had yet to get completely out of hand.

Bonnie blew off a feather that had fallen right by her forehead, caught on her hair and obstructing her view. She watched it fall down beside her, and looked over to Remus with a grin. “Can’t complain about getting it right in three tries.” she pointed out, there were some spells she did over and over and just couldn’t pull them off. Like the silencing one, why couldn’t she figure that one out? Bonnie picked a few feathers out of her hair, dropping them to the floor. “That one seems handy.”

Remus laughed and picked up the largest chunk of the cushion he could find up off the floor. He held it over his heart and looked solemn. “This noble pillow did not sacrifice it’s life in vain. It shall always be remembered as a hero. We salute you.” And he did. Before tucking the bit of cloth into his back pocket.

“I had good incentive to get it right quickly,” he said with a slight smile. “Bit difficult to impress pretty girls with magic if you can’t even do it properly.”

It was hard not to grin when someone was willing to be that goofy over a pillow. “You served us well, pillow.” she added as he tucked the cloth away. “Ah, well, color me impressed. A spell that doesn’t work is extremely frustrating.” never mind impressing, it would drive her insane just because she’d be letting herself down.

“Got any more you need to practice?” she asked, he had mentioned a few spells, but maybe he was only looking to get one done today.

“I’ve got a few more I could try,” he said with a small smile. “How about you help me sacrifice a few more pillows, and afterward I’ll buy us some pizza?”

“Sounds good to me.” she agreed, maybe because of the pizza, or because she wanted to see more magic. Or just because Remus was overly cute. “What’s next on your list?”
